Manchester is considered second to London in terms of cultural life. The city's brand is the comprehensive set of elegant modern trends in art and entertainment. It may not present such a swirling multicultural kaleidoscope as London, but it still has little to envy to the capital.

The city hosts great collections of contemporary art. The superb Lowry Museum at Salford Quays contains the biggest collection of original painting by L. S. Lowry, known for original Modernist representation of urban landscapes in subtle monochrome tones. Whitworth Art Gallery houses many modern masterpieces, as well as paintings of such masters as Constable and Turner. Innovative and experimental exhibitions are also frequently displayed.

The city has several great multiplexes. The Printworks, a cutting-edge new establishment, has one of the few IMAX screens in the UK, Virgin has 8-screen complex in Salford. Showcase in Belle Vue has 14 giant screens, and the Arena 7 in the city centre has 7 screens. Student and family audience prefers Odeon, located on the central Oxford Street, a more traditional large screen cinema. Cornerhouse features independent and arthouse works, Cine City in Withington shows foreign films.

The city's music history abounds in great indie-rock names, among which Stone Roses and Jamiroquai. Manchester Academy is the main venue for indie and dance bands. Labatt's Apollo is also a base for various performers, including British, American, Asian ones.  Band on the Wall is a small theatre, converted for music hall, where elements of original décor contribute to the original atmosphere. It features jazz and blues bands, local bands and jam nights. Roadhouse is a popular club scene for all-night parties.

Nightclubs of the city enjoy wild popularity all over Europe. Paradise Ractory and Phoenix are for those who love techno, trance and funky house. Rock World is destined for heavy metal and rock fans. The Brickhouse and 5^th Avenue play indie, grunge and alternative rock, attracting young folks. Club Underground The Ritz, luxuriously redecorated from a ballroom, sometimes houses University club nights. Bookbinders features jazz and swing, Matt and Phred - live local jazz, Cuba Café - hot salsa rhythms. Atomic Urban-Clubscape is an ultramodern party venue with trendiest trance music, Infinity is a posh hub for "golden youth".
