Manchester United Kingdom Palace theatre

Palace theatre

The Palace Theatre, one of the most important in the city, is run by the Live Nation company, which is also in charge of the Manchester opera House. The theatre was built in 1891, with the original capacity of 3,675, which later was reduced to 1,998. 'The Grand Old Lady of Oxford Street', as it was nicknamed, won a resounding success in the beginning of the 20th century, with artists such as Danny Kaye, Charles Laughton, Judy Garland, Gracie Fields, Noel Coward.

In 1970s it was threatened with the decline of audience numbers, as it happened to many live venues. Extensive support by Arts Council in 1980s and Norwest Holdings investment into the internal redecoration of theatre helped it to gain the place in top ranks of British stages. The Palace Theatre is one of the most popular outside London. Its repertoire includes international musicals, comedy, occasional performances of opera and ballet.

The highlights of the season include Mahabharata, a brand new dance performance, engaging 26 dancers, singers and musicians. The plot present the famous Indian epic poem as seen through the eyes of Draupadi, a woman who defies her fate to become the wife of five brothers and who, lost in the dice game, becomes a catalyst for terrible war. Choreography, combining modern approach with traditional Indian kathak techniques is accompanied with specially scored music.

The Wiggles, recent Australian hit, is coming back to UK with a brand new show, Wiggledancing.  The tour schedule includes Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bristol, Pymouth and London throughout June 2007. Last year they performed  live TV show before one million audience worldwide. The tour is going to gather flocks of children.

The Best of Broadway, celebrating its 5th anniversary,  brings Suranne Jones & Rowetta of X-Factor fame to the Palace Theatre. Suranne, starring in ITV's Strictly Confidential, Vincent, Dead Clever and Coronation Street, is pleased of getting back to the stage  after tight filming schedule. Rowetta was previously a backing vocalist for such indie groups as Simply Red and The Happy Mondays. The show also features some local dance groups and a huge supporting cast of 90 vocalists from across the country.
