Manchester United Kingdom Taxis and car rental
Manchester features traditional black cab taxi service, similar to that of London, and standard European style taxis. The latter should be booked in advance over the phone. They must bear yellow "Manchester City Council" sign on the bonnet and the firm's phone number on the sides.
Black cabs can be caught in the streets, though it can be difficult to find one after the pubs shut on weekend evenings. There are many taxi ranks, which are supervised by security/logistical staff during busy periods. These ranks are serviced only by black cabs, but there exist "private hire" taxi companies, where the visitors can walk in and wait for an available car.
Car hire is convenient if the tourists intend to visit many sites in the country or the city's vast suburbs and park areas. Most agencies require 25 years of age, sometimes a year or more driving experience. Seat belt is highly recommended and compulsory for children 4-17 years of age. Children under 3 must be in approved car seat. Speed limits on Interstate roads is 65 mph, highways - 55 mph, residential areas - 35 mph, business districts - 30 and school areas - 10 mph.
There are offices of all major European rental agencies: Budget, Avis, Hertz, Alamo, Thrifty, Europcar, Easycar, Sixt.
