Manchester is located in the moderate climatic zone, defined by domination of cool and damp Atlantic air masses. It has a reputation of a rainy city, though average annual rainfall, amounting to 809 mm, is less than in Plymouth of Cardiff. It receives less rain than New York City, but has relatively high percentage of cloudy days, which contributes to general reputation of gloomy weather. The precipitation is generally light and prolonged, with rare occasions of heavy sudden showers.

The city is characterized by relatively high humidity of air. Winter is cool and damp, rather misty. Snowfalls are rare, because of the city's low-lying, west-coast position, maritime influence and urban warming effect. Occasionally light snow can occur between January and March. Severe frosts are uncommon, in fact the temperature rarely drops below zero, lingering at the average 1 - 6°C.  Spring is characterized by sunny, dry weather and average temperatures about 11 - 15°C. April and May are the best time to visit the city, when gardens are lush and air is fresh. Agreeable temperatures and clear skies allow perfect pastime and extensive sightseeing.

 Summer is warm, never hot, with average temperatures about 20°C and frequent, though not abundant rains. August to October is the wettest period. In autumn the temperature lowers gradually, but relentlessly, to 10 - 12°C. November is probably the gloomiest month with unpredictable weather conditions.
