Manchester is one of the three BBC bases in England, apart from London and Bristol and chief regional base for BBc One North West Region. Such departments as the Children's BBC (CBBC), Comedy, Sport, and New Media Departments are scheduled for relocation from London to MediaCity complex at Salford Quays before 2010.

The city's own channel, Channel M, is operated by Guardian Media Group since 2000. It covers main national and international news and provides comprehensive information on local events. ITV franchisee Granada Television is engaged in production of many children's programs and the most famous British soap opera Coronation Street.

The city has impressive radio stations network, boasting the highest percentage utside London, including  BBC Radio Manchester, Galaxy, Key 103, Piccadilly Magic 1152, 105.4 Century FM, 100.4 Smooth FM, Capital Gold 1458, The Revolution and Xfm. Student community has its own media, Fuse FM at the University of Manchester and Shock FM at Salford. Radio Regen serves community network in Ardwick, Levenshulme, Wythenshawe.

The Guardian newspaper, developing in big mass-media company, originated from Manchester in 1821. Though in 1964 many of its departments were moved in London, its head office is still in the city. Manchester Evening News enjoys biggest circulation and sales within the city, in the centre it is now distributed for free. Metro North West is distributed on Metrolink stops, rail station and other busy places.

In the past the city took honourable title of the country's main publishing centre, with 1,500 journalists employed only in printed media, but in 1980s head offices of such papers as The Daily Telegraph, Daily Express, Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror, The Sun moved to London. Now there remains such bestseller as daily Sport and several lifestyle magazines, as "YQ Magazine" and "Moving Manchester".
