Manchester Airport, the biggest in the UK apart from London ones, in 2004 was rated 16^th busiest airport in the world in terms of international flights, and 48^th in terms of passenger traffic. It is located in the Graeater Manchester metropolitan area half way between Manchester and Cheshire. Manchester Airport group operates it as well as East Midlands, the smaller Hurn, Bournemouth and Kirmington, Humberside.

The airport has two parallel runways, three adjacent terminals, and a railway station. Airport express provides rapid and convenient connection with the city. The airport provides direct flights to more than 200 destinations. Over 95 airlines pass through it, serving various routes to North America, Asia and Africa.

Three interconnected terminals allow passengers to move between them without going outside. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked with a skywalk, a passage running across the airfield. Along it are located shops, railway station and a Radisson Hotel.

Terminal 1 serves international routes and is used by many charter operators. It was opened in 1968 and had undergone many renovations. Terminal 2, opened in 1993, is used mostly for long haul and charter traffic to numerous Middle East, African and American destinations.  Projects for expanding it to accommodate more passengers are being planned for the nearest future.

Terminal 3, formerly Terminal 1 Domestic, was opened under the patronage of Princess Diana of Wales, and in the late 1990s reconstructed and renamed as one of the hubs for BA Connect service. It is currently used by Flybe, British Airways, bmi and bmibaby, and domestic traffic.
