The University of Manchester with over 40,000 students, 500 academic programmes, 10,000 staff and more than £600,000,000 income, it is one of the biggest educational establishments in the UK. It has favourable reputation in many disciplines, notably in life sciences, engineering, humanities, economics, sociology and the social sciences. The University was formed in 2004, when Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) were merged into single entity. It received many awards, University of the Year 2006 and Times Higher Supplement's University of the Year prize in 2005. It is 5^th in UK and 9^th in Europe in terms of academic quality.

University is scheduled to undergo major renovation and expansion projects by 2015. These include Flagship Student Services and Nursing Building, Functional Biology Building, Life Sciences Research Building, Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre, Astronomy, Mathematics, Physics and Photon Science Building and some other.

The University's John Rylands Library, founded in memory of John Rylands, Manchester manufacturer who supported many charity projects, is the largest nonb-legal deposit library in UK. This site houses an important collection of historic books and manuscripts, including the oldest extant New Testament. Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics is a famous observatory, which played significant role in major researches of 20^th century and in confirming Einstein's theory of General Relativity.

 Manchester Metropolitan University was formed from the old polytechnic college and to some extend retains this specialization. Royal Northern College of Music is one of the most important establishments of this kind in UK. Manchester Business School is now a part of Manchester University.
