Public transport

 

Manchester is one of the principal knots in the Northwest England passenger and cargo transportation network. It public transport system covers vast areas of the city centre and numerous industrial districts.

The main bus station is the Piccadilly Gardens. A new state-of-the-art interchange was built at Shudehill for the North. The buses are operated by First or Stagecoach. Metroshuttle is a free minibus owned by First jointly with local council. It runs three lines, covering the city centre and the area between principal transport parks.

The south Manchester corridor, beginning with Oxford Road and Wilmslow Road is the most-served bus route in Europe. The coaches run between Rusholme and universities every 1 minute.

Metrolink, locally called the tram, is the mass-transit network, covering main part of the city. At present  it runs two lines, Altrincham-Bury, every 6 minutes at peak times and 12 at off-peak; and Piccadilly-Eccles every 12 minutes at peak times, 15 at off-peak. The area from Piccadilly to Cornbrook is shared between these lines. The project of expanding the system to 5 lines is being elaborated, but now the schedule of construction is not determined yet.

If the visitors would travel often, they can obtain a Metromax ticket. The following stations give access to the city's sights:

Piccadilly and Victoria - main railway stations.

Altrincham - interchange for buses and trains to Cheshire

Harbour City - Salford Quays, the Lowry, Imperial War Museum North.

Old Trafford - Manchester United and the cricket ground.

Heaton Park - the city's main parkland area.
